Planning and More Planning - History!

So I am in the midst of school planning. I don't do this very well because I am not much of a planner. What about you?

BiblioPlan is my main spine. We are doing the second book in the Medieval History year, and that begins with world explorers and the Spanish Inquisition. I am less excited to study the Spanish Inquisition because it was so downright horrifying.

We have begun our study already in a read-aloud that I read to my older children before they graduated. It is a powerful book that I highly recommend, My Escape from the Auto De Fe.

It is written as an autobiography, but I can't tell (and the internet doesn't tell me) if it is a true story or not. Certainly it is historical as these kinds of things did happen, but as for the truth of this particular story, I am unsure. It is well worth reading regardless.

We will blend into the Reformation as well and I am always happy to cover that because so many people did such heroic things (and some not so heroic) to bring the truth to the world.

A new resource for me, via the Crew this year, is Institute for Excellence in Writing's, Timeline of Classics. This is a giant list of literature resources listed according to time period. YES.

I have still not decided which reformers we will study up close, but The Hawk That Dare Not Hunt By Day is a likely candidate. What are your favorites for this time period?

We will also incorporate Amy Pak's *wonderful* resource, Time Travelers American History Study: New World Explorers, and a beautiful book that I already own, The World Made New: Why the Age of Exploration Happened and How It Changed the World, from National Geographic.

We also like using games - for fun. Educational games are great, but sometimes you just want to have fun!

This is a new one for us - TAPPLE. This is a neat little word/memory game (so there is educational value in it, of course, but that is not why we are using it!) What games do you enjoy playing? Do your kids like to play them too?

So those are some of the things coming up in our house and homeschool. What are you planning for the new year?

What are you excited about?
Happy planning!

Happy News Times Two

My best friend and I celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary last weekend. I am so blessed to share my life with him and the gift of our five children.

The week before our anniversary, we were able to share, with great joy, the amazing news that our beautiful firstborn has found her shining knight and he asked her to marry him. We are grateful to the God of all the Universe for this match.

They will marry next year and we are now in the midst of wedding planning.

My heart is full!
