Chicken Run

So we are the proud owners of a tiny backyard flock of chickens. There is great excitement here! Here they are:

They could not be any cuter if they tried. (Unless perhaps, they were baby ducks. I think baby ducks take the record for cutest tiny animal ever.) :D

We got these five different kinds: Wellsummer, Ameraucana (tw0 of these), Barred Rock, Gold Laced Wyandotte, and a Speckled Sussex. What great names! They will have varied shades of brown and the Ameraucanas will lay blueish green eggs. It will be quite some time before we expect to see them, but still, it is fun to think about. We are going to use the under-area of our raised beds as their run. Double use of one space!

Can you tell we are excited? Yeah, I thought so. :+)

We have Ameraucanas and Barred Rocks, and we've had Wellsummers in the past. The Wellsummer eggs are a dark brown and HUGE. We also hatched out some Ameraucana / brown egg layer crosses, so now we get some speckled army green eggs. They crack me up. :-) We can't imagine living without chickens now. Congrats!

I am excited about the Wellsummer. I did not even know about them until we went to the feed store and they had them. The eggs sound so pretty to me. We can't wait! :D

I love the idea of a cross with speckled army green eggs! LOL

Connor is wanting to get into chickens... and we might just be able to make that happen sooner rather than later...

He's even working out deals with his brothers to pay them for taking care of the chickens when he is at scout stuff or whatever... and the pay would be in hard boiled eggs. :) (Of course, has he asked me if I'll hard-boil them for 'em? Noooooo....)
